Purpose and Goals
This two-day seminar presents a detailed overview of modern carbonate depositional environments. Comparative sedimentology, using modern analogs, and the associated models of sedimentation, are the foundation for interpreting carbonate facies in the rock record and predicting trends in the subsurface.

Who Should Attend
Past seminars have been attended by geologists, geophysicists, reservoir
engineers, log analysts and managers.

Seminar Description
Incorporating observations from the northern and southern Bahamas, south Florida, Arabian Gulf, Caribbean Sea, and Australia (Great Barrier Reef and Shark Bay), this seminar reviews the following modern depositional environments: open-marine basinal deposits, including allochthonous debris deposits; platform-margin reef systems; platform-margin and -interior oolitic sands; platform-interior peloidal sands and muds; tidal flats (humid versus arid settings); beach and aeolian deposits; and coastal evaporites. The early diagenesis and porosity modification associated with these depositional environments will be discussed as well. Controls on the occurrence and distribution of modern carbonate depositional environments are evaluated through the presentation of alternative models. Participants learn which sedimentary attributes of modern facies are preserved in the rock record and are often diagnostic. This seminar ends with a discussion of the  hydrocarbon play potential for each depositional environment, using proven subsurface case studies. Reservoirs are related to modern environments at the same scale.

If you cannot attend a modern carbonate field seminar, this is the best alternative!

Instructor
Jeffrey J. Dravis (Ph D) is a technical consultant and instructor in carbonate geology with 22 years of worldwide industry and field experience in all aspects of applied modern and ancient carbonate geology. This experience includes 8 years with Exxon Production Research Company where he headed up Exxon's worldwide training efforts in carbonates. Since then, he has taught 91 basic and advanced carbonate seminars. Past consulting projects include reservoir studies in W. Texas, Devonian of W. Canada and Russia, Jurassic and Cretaceous of Gulf of Mexico, and Cretaceous of Tunisia; and exploration studies in the Jurassic and Cretaceous of the U.S. Gulf Coast; Devonian of western Canada and Russia; Jurassic/Cretaceous of Africa and Mexico.
